Our Story

This is a story of true dedication. It begins in

1954
with the sale of prepared soil in bulk to gardeners, institutions and municipalities in the greater Montreal area. Twenty years later, in

1975
we started bagging prepared soils, potting soil and composted manure for garden centres. Throughout the 1980’s we grew the business and became an industry leader in eastern Canada.

1990
was a milestone year for the company. Canadian and U.S. superstores asked us to produce their house brands. We seized the opportunity to place our own brands on the market: Hortibec and Hortibec Pro. Since then, we have been offering a full range of soils, potting soils, peat mosses and mulches to the mass markets. By

1995
we had created our marketing department. This marked the beginning of Modugno Hortibec’s proven capabilities in market identification, brand development, packaging design and the implementation of complete marketing programs.

2001
was a year that made us especially proud. First we increased investments in R&D, equipment and production goods. Then we launched our new line of 100% natural products, Nature Mix. This permitted us to provide the home gardener all natural potting soils free of any chemical fertilizers or ammendments.
